Because of my experience with a family member who suffered from Alzheimer’s, I became involved in designing and creating quilts for dementia patients. They give the person an outlet for their anxiety, fiddling with the various buttons, zippers, toys, and textures incorporated into these colorful lap quilts. I’ve donated more than sixty quilts to institutions accepting low-income clients. These quilts are fun to design because the usual rules of appropriate color, materials, and construction techniques for art quilts can be disregarded. The goal is a safe, colorful and engaging piece that is sturdy and washable. I’m sure most people probably wouldn’t consider these ‘art’ but, I’ve had fun with them and I hope my recipients have, too…
